Ma and girls

The very first time I heard of these ladies was in 2011, I had read through that book where they are first mentioned a couple of times but I never took note of them. Neither did I ever hear any preacher mention their names. My thinking was totally revolutionised the day I settled to know more about these 5 girls, their courage, their strength and firmness will surprise you. Did I tell you this may be a long post? Well you may want to make a cup of tea and settle down as I introduce you to  ladies who defied all the odds in a patriarchal society, girls who rose to say no way! This can’t be, we must have our share of the meat! Talking about the daughters of Zelophehad.

The day my pastor preached about the daughters of Zelophehad, it sounded like it wasn’t the bible, why haven’t I heard or even noticed these girls in all my 15+years walk with God. Ah well, go with me to Numbers 26:33(KJV) “And Zelphehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah”

Prior to this scripture, the bible talked about sons of Joseph, sons of Gilead…, we read of but when it came to Zelophehad, it is said he had no sons! That means no heir! No ‘chop chair’. In Cameroon or at least Nso where I come from, heirs are still considered to be male. If a man has his quiver full of girls only, he is amongst men to be pitied. So I assume Zelophehad was pitied, who was going to sustain his name? who was going to receive the inheritance? Well just before you join the pity party read on, let’s skip to Numbers 27:1-7

Then, came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir…they stood before Eleazar the priest and before the princes and all the congregation by the door of the …saying, our father died in the wilderness … he had no sons vs 4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? GIVE unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father. And Moses brought their cause before the LORD. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, The daughters of Zelphehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them…

Wow! Did those girls just cause the LORD to make a new decree? Now these are ladies who knew how to turn things up, they knew how to defend their cause, they knew how to make their request known, they knew how to defy the odds and the conventions. Well before I continue with the girls I will give it up for Moses; Uncle Mos was truly a humble leader to have granted them audience, and even make their request known to the LORD. For a minute I tried situating this whole happening in my home town, eh! These girls would have been labeled “those proud, arrogant Wuyika girls or Sunjo girls with an attitude” how can they even table such a request to the elders? Don’t they know the laws of the land? They must have been brain-washed or something, they grew up in this land, they know very well that inheritance is an exclusive preserve for men, how can they think of such a thing? I am convinced these wonderful daughters of Zelophehad did not ask their moms permission to approach the leaders. She would have probably stopped them, but they dared to state their case without considering who will think what of them.

For the search of male children, homes have been torn apart; infidelity that results to untold misery in most homes. If God has filled your quiver with girls only, please enjoy them! Bring them up to be the best they can! Do not place a limitation on them because they are only girls. I will save you the countless stories this quest for a male child has done to many homes that I know of. It is sad to say, I have seen quite a few cases of the boys that were highly sort after growing up to be a disgrace to their parents, what do you expect when you raise a child with the mentality that he is above his sisters just because he is a boy. He is a blessing like any other child! If your table is surrounded by girls, know you are a blessed dad/mom! Girls are truly special just like my friend Precious spells out clearly on her blog, from the perspective of a mom with an experience in this regard.

It took 5 ladies for a new inheritance law to be written in Israel’s history! So tell me one reason why you will cage your girls from venturing into whatever fields God has designed for them. I come from a family of 5 kids; 4 ladies and a guy, my dad did his best at bringing us up equally, we had to learn about cars, motor parts and other things that were seen to be a domain for boys. I regret not taking the challenge to learn how to drive a tractor and operating a caterpillar something he so wished one of us knows. Anyway till date when I talk about cars and some technicalities some of my peers wonder…I got if from Dad.

It is the will of God that we blossom and fulfill our purpose on earth, male or female, boy or girl. You young lady reading this could be the one to rewrite history, or your daughter.

“Like stars on the earth, every child is special” I celebrate both kids the Lord has blessed us with.
