“This know also, that in the last days perilous (fierce, difficult, dangerous, terrible) times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
“May you not be found on the other side when the LORD draws the line” I listened keenly as the preacher echoed these words from the pulpit. My mind wandered into discussions I had with my husband during the week; the times we live in. Perilous times! Does it sound like a cliché to you that we are living in uncertain times? Yes, we are living in terrible times, and I feel the need to remind us (Christians) of some truths in the word. Not like I think you have forgotten, but more like because the Bible says “remind them of these things as you see the day approaching” (2Ti 2:14). This a reminder to the bride waiting eagerly for her bridegroom. Just stop a minute and look around you, there is a multitude of voices spewing out the wrong things.
We live in times when everybody does what seems right in their own eyes, and every evil deed can be justified. They will use statements like: it’s my conviction; that’s the revelation I got; the ‘Holy Spirit’ told me to do so and so on…
These things you will notice in perilous times:
Lofty titles for clergy and pastors:
I was recounting some of the happenings I witnessed during my visit home (Cameroon), one of such events touched on a poster I saw with the inscription “the return of prophets”.The card carried lofty names; the territorial commander, Major I and Major II, the lieutenant-in-charge. What happened to easy appellations for preachers? There is a rise in the number of preachers who have decided to twist the scriptures to suit their desires. They ditch out what the itchy ears of the masses want to hear. If there ever be a need to be a Berean Christian, it is now! Search the scriptures, if what they say is true. Most claim to speak the mind of God, by these allegations many have been deceived. Justin Peeters says “If you want to hear God’s voice, read the bible, if you want to hear him audibly, read the Bible out loud.”
Increasing commercialization of the gospel:
Do you have cable TV at home? You will be sad when you zap through Christian channels nowadays. If the broadcaster is not selling a book, it will be a CD, anointed water, or some seed sewing advert.
I learned of a ministry in Cameroon that sells a bottle of anointing oil for 20.000FCFA! I have been searching the scriptures to see the justification of such actions to no avail. The lust of the flesh has doubtlessly crept into the house of the LORD, therefore the more need to be watchful.
I heard some fascinating teachings lately; polygamy in our times is acceptable in the church it just depends on how you see it. I read an interesting write up by a certain man of God who holds that because there are more born again ladies in church than men, the few men should have more than one wife to prevent the believing women from getting married to unbelievers. Yes, you read that correctly, the pastor encourages the first wives to die to self and be able to allow their husbands take in more wives if they wish to.
The gospel of salvation is fastly being effaced in some settings while the prosperity gospel is taking deep roots. If you care so much about the individuals material success, you should care much about his/her eternity. What happened to the message of righteousness? What about teaching them to OBEY? Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Beware of false prophets; they have substantially increased upon the earth.
Little wonder, many of us now have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof and of course lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. Nothing wrong with loving fun, but everything wrong with liking it more than God. Isn’t this happening in our times? Men are just unapologetically ungodly!
The proud, boasters:
So much pride and arrogance these days. The same sin that ousted Lucifer from the presence of God is still operating in many ways. It is a universal sign of the end times, and you do not need to look far to see this culprit project himself. We have many uncompromising unbelievers: dishing out shameless blasphemy, boldly atheistic. So, child of God, we need to draw the line, not blending into the trend equally! I can’t be the only one who has noticed an increase in materialism: A craze on the latest brand of anything; the most recent makeup brand. The latest gadget, why use iPhone 7 when iPhone 8 is in the market? And the love for money. “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1Timothy 6:10
We have to guard against complacency, blending into the trend. There is the new craze; sex tapes by young people, a thing we didn’t hear of while growing up. It is more challenging to bring up young people in today’s world. There is a war against the young, let us admonish them to live for and in Christ. We live in terrible times, and that should remind us to stand firm more than ever.
The devil and his cohorts aren’t joking on their end-time mission to steal, kill and destroy, in fact, they are aggressively carrying out their master’s evil biddings. It will be a shame if we Christians continue to do very little or nothing in pushing back this gross darkness hitting the world.
Choose ye this day whom you will serve… and if you chose to serve the Lord, let there be a distinction in your lifestyle. Enough of us just blending into the society! The body of Christ needs to be reminded of these things even as we see the day approaching. So that when the Son of man returns he will find faith on the earth [Luke 18:8].
There have to be a distinction people between those who serve the LORD and those who do not. “Come out from among them, and be ye separate.” And let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity [2 Tim2:19b]
John Wesley once said “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergymen or laymen, they alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of Heaven upon Earth.”
